Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was established in the year 1991 with B.Tech. (CSE) program and an intake of 40. It has grown by leaps and bounds over the last three decades with intake increased to 300 by 2016. It has started M.Tech.(CST) in the year 2006 with an take of 18 and increased to 36 by year 2011. The department was recognised as research centre by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTUK) who allocates research scholars to guides recognised by the university.
The department has all the necessary infrastructure, highly qualified and experienced faculty for a better teaching learning experience to students. The department has well equipped laboratories (11), research labs (3), seminar halls (2) and e-class rooms (4) and other class rooms (13). The strength of the department is the faculty with a total of 66 faculty out of which 10 are doctorates, 11 are about to finish their Ph.D., another 10 are registered for Ph.D. and the remaining have M.Tech. qualification.
The courses offered in the department meet the requirements of both industry and research. The faculty of the Department are actively engaged in research in the areas of Cryptography, Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics and Cloud Computing. The faculty members are collaborating with institutions like Bennett University, Netenrich- Hyderabad, TCS Ion and Opsramp Inc. for research and consultancy. The projects worth Rs. 1.68 crores are either completed or ongoing which are funded by DST, AICTE and UGC, international funding agencies and sponsored by college also. A total of 203 research papers were published in the past 5 years with a citation index of 522 (average citation index of 8.847) witness the focus of department towards research.
The department attracts high quality students with the starting admitted rank of 1634. The department has impressive placement record with 327 placements with highest package of Rs. 8 lakhs per annum. In addition to the professional body chapters like CSI, ISTE, IE, the department has a vibrant student professional body named Association of Computer Engineers (ACE) which organises various co-curricular, extracurricular and social activities in the department. The department organises a technical symposium “Spurthi” every year to showcase the talents of students. The department also organises conferences at regular intervals to share latest research advances to the faculty and the students. 6th IEEE Advanced Computing Conference was hosted by the department of CSE in 2016 which attracted 1160 papers for review. In 2019 December the department has organised a national conference on “Productivity, Quality, Reliability, Optimization and Computational Modelling” (NCPQROCM) which is sponsored by AICTE.
The department celebrated its Silver jubilee in the year 2016. Stepping into 30th year of its existence, the department takes pride of its graduating students and many of whom are leaders in academia, industry, government and a few are highly successful entrepreneurs.
The department continuously monitors the future skill requirements and makes appropriate changes to content and pedagogy. In this direction, the department has taken initiative and introduced courses like Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things in B.Tech.(CSE) program. In line with the report of the Committee constituted by AICTE for Preparing Short & Medium Term Perspective Plan for Engineering Education in India, the department is taking initiatives to introduce new programs in emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), Data Science and Big Data Analytics, Business systems. This initiation will help the graduating students to acquire the right capabilities for the job-in-demand. The department wishes that the Technology should be used for individual learning paths for each student (Education 4.0).
